Caravan Carpark Films is proud to announce that Uproar has been awarded Best Oceania Film at the 2024 Septimius Awards, held in Amsterdam on Tuesday, 10 September 2024. The win marks a moment of international recognition for a uniquely Aotearoa story - one that captures identity, courage and self-discovery against the backdrop of a defining moment in New Zealand’s history.
Uproar is a co-production between Firefly Films, Caravan Carpark Films and Kingston Productions. The film was directed by Paul Middleditch and Hamish Bennett, written by Hamish Bennett and Sonia Whiteman and produced by Emma Slade, Angela Cudd and Sandra Kailahi.
Starring Julian Dennison, Minnie Driver and Rhys Darby, Uproar follows 17-year-old Josh Waaka as he navigates cultural identity and belonging during the turbulent 1981 Springbok Tour. Balancing humor and heart, the film explores what it means to find your voice - and the courage to use it - when the world feels divided.
The Septimius Awards, held annually in Amsterdam, celebrate excellence in independent and international cinema, recognizing achievements across film, television and digital media. The event is known for creating a global platform for diverse storytelling.
This year’s ceremony also honored Cuba Gooding Jr., who received the Lifetime Achievement Award, alongside other acclaimed recipients from around the world - further underscoring the awards’ reputation for celebrating cinematic excellence.
Uproar’s recognition on this international stage affirms the global appetite for authentic, character-driven stories from New Zealand and the Pacific.
We are deeply proud of our collaborators, our cast and our crew - and honored to see Uproar continue its journey across international screens, carrying the voice and spirit of Aotearoa with it.
