Caravan Carpark Films is honored to announce that Uproar has been awarded the Church of Sweden Youth Film Award 2025 at the BUFF Malmö Film Festival in Sweden. The award ceremony took place in Malmö on Sunday, 23 March 2025, marking another milestone in the film’s international journey.

The Church of Sweden Youth Film Award, which includes a prize of 100,000 Swedish kronor, is presented each year to a film for young audiences that demonstrates exceptional artistic quality and a deep engagement with issues of social justice, equality and humanity. The jury praised Uproar for its “heart, humor and humanity,” commending the film for its ability to capture the courage it takes to stand up for what’s right - and to find belonging in a divided world.

The jury wrote: “In uncertain times, it’s more important than ever to have the courage to stand up for justice and the equal value of all people. This film reminds us that we all have a part to play, that our voices matter, and that kindness and courage can change lives. Told with warmth, humor, and authenticity, it’s a story about identity, belonging, and standing your ground.”

The award recognizes Uproar’s continuing impact on audiences across the world. The film - starring Julian Dennison, Minnie Driver and Rhys Darby and directed by Paul Middleditch and Hamish Bennett - tells the story of 17-year-old Josh Waaka as he navigates questions of identity, family and self-determination during the 1981 Springbok Tour in New Zealand. Produced by Emma Slade, Angela Cudd and Sandra Kailahi, Uproar has already garnered acclaim for its blend of humor, heart and political resonance.

The BUFF Malmö Film Festival, now in its 42nd year, is Sweden’s leading youth and children’s film festival and one of the most respected events of its kind globally. Held annually in March, BUFF showcases the best of international cinema for young audiences - films that not only entertain but challenge, inspire and provoke dialogue. Each year, the festival brings together filmmakers, educators and industry professionals who share a commitment to stories that empower the next generation.

We’re incredibly proud of everyone who brought this film to life - our cast, crew, partners and supporters. To see Uproar connect with audiences from Aotearoa to Sweden reminds us of what storytelling can do when it’s made with purpose and heart.
